about sound collective
sound collective is a genuinely innovative ensemble, formed of leading musicians from British orchestras and chamber groups.
The flexible team presents only four to five projects per year, so that the already busy musicians feel that each sound collective event is special. The group dedicates more rehearsal time than is often possible in other environments, and can take a fresh look at even the most familiar repertoire.
Programmes often combine less well known works by the great masters with contemporary music and the cornerstones of the repertoire. See projects & programmes for details.
Wherever possible, the group will combine performances with musical guides to the works with players, conductor and composers given the opportunity to talk about the music. We take care to speak to our audience in a non-technical manner, so that those unfamiliar with the technical aspects of music can appreciate what is being communicated.
Education and participation is becoming increasingly important to the work of the ensemble (see our education page). We also have an important collaboration with Trinity Laban, Greenwich, with members of the group mentoring musicians from the conservatoire's Post Graduate programme. The young professionals are able to observe the members of the sound collective at work both with the group and in other musical scenarios, to observe the realities of the music profession and be assisted with their crucial leap from study to professional performance.
Formed in 2003, sound collective is proud to work with members of the Philharmonia, London Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera, RTE Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and Royal Ballet Sinfonia.
